Food Trends 2017!
Tuesday, 10 January 2017 | Scott
Every year certain types of foods become trendy and there is a certain influx in demand for them. Being in the food industry for over 40 years, it's important for us to understand what's going to be big each year. These are the trends that are expected to be big in 2017:
1. Healthy Snack Plates
More and more people are continuing to 'blur' mealtimes and opt for smaller healthier snacking, opposed to three meals a day according to the BBC Good Food. Demand is growing for 'sharing' plates where customers can pick and share foods and healthier snacks, opposed to a main course meal. Therefore we expect to be a rise in homemade healthy snacks this year.
2. Zero Waste
Always a good topic and one we fully support. Zero waste is important especially in our current social climate. There is some real change happening, thanks to restaurants like Rubies in the Rubble who make jam from rejected fruits and Fog Point Vodka which is made from net-caught fog moisture!
3. Digital-ready food
The rise of social media over the past decade has been remarkable. It's now become a digital hub for people to get inspiration of foodie ideas and now more producers and restauranteurs are taking notice. You can now find black burger buns, rainbow cakes and other colourful and exciting foods that are being produced to fit in with this digital culture.
It's been on the horizon for some time and something we came across last year, but has never really taken off. Maybe the thought of eating insects puts you off! However, as more and more talk about sustainability, they are suddenly being perceived as more than just garden pests. Now, we are not saying go outside and eat the first worm you find... Uh Uh! However, we expect this trend to grow rapidly over the coming years. Watch this space.
